The Mitzvah of the Day

Hear the Shofar

There is something extraordinary about the sound of the Shofar. There are no words and no complicated prayers — just a simple, ancient sound that has called to the Jewish soul for thousands of years.

This year, the first day of Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbat, so the Shofar is sounded on Sunday, 13 September. Join us at the river to hear the Shofar and take part in this special mitzvah together with family, friends and the wider community.

A Fresh Start

What is Tashlich?

Tashlich is one of the most beautiful customs of Rosh Hashanah. We gather beside flowing water and recite special prayers while taking a few moments to reflect on the year that has passed and the person we would like to become in the year ahead.

The word Tashlich means “to cast away”, recalling the words of the prophet Micah: “You will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.” It is a symbolic moment of leaving the past behind and beginning again.
